The IUCAA/IAP group have a constraint on (\Delta \alpha/\alpha) evolution with redshift which makes it look like the Webb et al results are only as significant as cosmic topology detections :( http://de.arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0401094 \Delta\alpha / \alpha = (-0.06\pm0.06)e-5 The individual values range from -1e-5 to +1e-5 - see Fig.15 on p22 In other words, we should keep checking, but not yet get too excited. pozd boud
