cafe+/research meeting; winter mini-workshop

Cześć wszystkim,
    Thank you to Motyl for motivating us to meet and talk cosmo
projects. :)

So here are two proposals, one for regular meetings
(cafe+ + free discussion), and one for a one-day mini-workshop,
respectively.  The research meeting immediately follows the
cafe+, according to this proposal, so that people less directly
involved in cosmo can limit their time to one hour, while people
more involved can keep talking, since chances are the conversations
started will relate to research projects, old or new!

CAFE+/research meeting   Proposal V0.01 comments before 28.11.2002 pls!

CAFE+

Time/Day: **14:15-15:15 czwartek** (Thursday)

Place: Radio building

Frequency: once a fortnight (**28.11.2002**, 12.12.2002, ...)

Purpose: stimulate discussion and understanding each other's
cosmo/extragal research, but also include astronomers/students not
directly involved in cosmo research projects, in order to encourage
general information flow.

Format:
 * very short talks, **maximum 5 minutes**, explained in a simple
way, related to cosmology/extragalactic astronomy in some way, e.g.
  * your own research
  * an astro-ph article
  * a printed journal article
  * a cosmology announcement in the govt/corporate media
  * a web site about cosmology
  * software you think is useful
  * something else - use your imagination!

 * in each case hopefully followed by questions, discussion

 * język/language: wybór wolny/free choice

 * the list of topics may be decided "on the spot", or people with
a zwicky login may add to the agenda beforehand at:

Comments:
* having very short talks encourages
 * a variety of speakers
 * possible cross-fertilisation of randomly chosen ideas
 * more likely to concentrate on questions and discussion
 * people won't get bored
 * more likely to have spontaneous ideas
 * practice in going straight to a key idea and explaining it in simple words
* the time limit of one hour means that people know this won't take up
their whole day; those people more interested, and with more time, can
hang around for the research meeting.

Participation:
This should be of interest to all TCfA staff and astronomy students,
though there will probably be a core group mostly of cosmo/extragal
people.


RESEARCH MEETING (immediately following CAFE+)

Time/Day: **15:15-open-ended (15:50 for bus) czwartek** (Thursday)

Place: Radio building

Frequency: once a fortnight (**28.11.2002**, 12.12.2002, ...)

Purpose: free format discussion on ongoing or planned research
projects, discussion of results, what steps to take next, what's
missing from an analysis, what's right with it, what's wrong with it,
stimulation of ideas for new projects, ...

Participation:
  This is aimed at people actually doing or hoping to soon do
cosmo/extragalactic research, and we expect there to be typically
between 5-10 people.  It is open to others, but may be boring to
people not involved in the research, it would probably be mostly
in English (ale nie ma reguł przeciw po polsku!). But you're
welcome anyway!
