Abstract of final report
In September 2003, the executives of ESO and ESA agreed to establish a
number of working groups to explore possible synergies between these
two major European astronomical institutions on key scientific
issues. The first two working group reports (on Extrasolar Planets and
the Herschel--ALMA Synergies) were released in 2005 and 2006, and this
third report covers the area of Fundamental Cosmology.
The Working Group's mandate was to concentrate on fundamental issues
in cosmology, as exemplified by the following questions:
* What are the essential questions in fundamental cosmology?
* Which of these questions can be tackled, perhaps exclusively,
with astronomical techniques?
* What are the appropriate methods with which these key questions
can be answered?
* Which of these methods appear promising for realization within
Europe, or with strong European participation, over the next ~15
years?
* Which of these methods has a broad range of applications and a
high degree of versatility even outside the field of fundamental
cosmology?
>From the critical point of view of synergy between ESA and ESO, one
major resulting recommendation concerns the provision of new
generations of imaging survey, where the image quality and near-IR
sensitivity that can be attained only in space are naturally matched
by ground-based imaging and spectroscopy to yield massive datasets
with well-understood photometric redshifts (photo-z's). Such
information is essential for a range of new cosmological tests using
gravitational lensing, large-scale structure, clusters of galaxies,
and supernovae. All these methods can in principle deliver high
accuracy, but a multiplicity of approaches is essential in order that
potential systematics can be diagnosed -- or the possible need for new
physics revealed. Great scope in future cosmology also exists for ELT
studies of the intergalactic medium and space-based studies of the CMB
and gravitational waves; here the synergy is less direct, but these
areas will remain of the highest mutual interest to the agencies. All
these recommended facilities will produce vast datasets of general
applicability, which will have a tremendous impact on broad areas of
astronomy.

ENERGETIC EVENTS IN THE UNIVERSE: FROM PHYSICS TO COSMOLOGY
25-28 June 2007, Marseille, France
This conference is aimed at reviewing the physics of energetic objects
and processes in the Universe, and their impact on cosmology and
cosmic evolution.
Scientific rationale:
Energetic events in terms of physical processes or specific objects
are incomparable tools to probe the Universe and its components.
They are signature of dramatic processes in the primordial Universe
with gravitational waves consecutive to an inflationary phase or in
the present one with possible annihilation of dark matter.
They are bright candles, like SNe or GRBs, allowing to stride space
and look back in time on prodigious scales.
They are beacons whose light reveals both their hosts and matter
along their path. As such, the aim of this conference is to explore
all these aspects focusing on the physics of objects and processes
in the perspective of their use for cosmology and cosmic evolution
(which are the titles of our 3 sessions).
Sessions will be devoted to these topics with both reviews and short
contributions.
INVITED REVIEWERS
SESSION I: PHYSICS OF OBJECTS AND PROCESSES
Inflation as a paradigm is now part of the cosmological model.
It is the most energetic period of the Universe. What is the underlying
physics? What are predictions like those e.g concerning primordial
GW which renders specific models falsifiable? What are the observational
prospects?
* Pre Big Bang period, inflation, induced primordial GW : Dr Mukhanov
(Munich University)
* Is inflation falsifiable with foreseen instrumentation ? : Dr A.
Cooray (UC Irvine)
Dark matter is probably unavoidable from galaxy and cluster dynamics and
LSS growth. It is still a challenge to know what it is, and what the
different detection methods can do to identify its nature. The theoretical
predictions and experimental perspectives will be addressed with a special
attention on high energy annihilation products
* Dark matter annihilation and its products : Dr P. Salati (LAPP- IN2P3)
* Complementarity between Direct and indirect Dark Matter searches and
Collider Experiments : Dr Sadoulet (Berkeley)
Supernovae and GRBs are produced by the cataclysmic end of stars. SN Ib/C,
SNII and long GRBs are produced by the core collapse of massive stars and
are intrinsically linked. SNIa and short GRBs are respectively produced by
the collapse of a white dwarf and by the collapse of two neutron stars.
Reviews on the origin and on the connection between these different
phenomena will be presented. The impact on the cosmological applications
of the long GRBs and SNIa will be emphasized.

SESSION II : IMPACT ON COSMOLOGY
The recent acceleration expansion of the universe has been put on firm basis
using SNI. Other probes are however needed to perform precision cosmology,
in particular to higher z (are other acceleration phases possible?). Reviews
will present the state of art on how SN and GBR would be more and more
"standardizable " as well as a status on present searches and future
prospects.

SESSION III : IMPACT ON COSMIC EVOLUTION
Even more than QSOs, GRB seem to be the brightest and most distantsources in
the Universe. They are thus suitable to probe in details the intergalactic
medium at all epochs, including the re-ionization, on which they themselves
impact. They are also the first star-forming objects, providing first hints
on the star formation history of the Universe.

Towards the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) - Marseille, Nov.

The conference includes a presentation of the E-ELT project status by
ESO and two sessions dedicated to ELT science and instrumentation. The
scientific organizers of the conference are ESO, LAM and OPTICON.
Deadlines for abstract submission and funding requests is September
30th. People are advised to book their hotels as soon as possible.
The conference venue is Marseille, Palais du Pharo.

W każdym bądź razie, myślę, że te spotkanie mógł być *bardzo* interesujące
dla tematu. Cytat na dolu jest trochę w (fr) ale większość jest w (en).

3. Réunion des utilisateurs français du CFHTLS
A national (French) CFHTLS users meeting will be organised on
November 6-7 , 2006 in Paris (IAP).
If you planned to attend and/or present results, please send an email
to mellier(a)iap.fr and hjmcc(a)iap.fr .
This meeting will be an opportunity to summarize the status of the
surveys (Deep, Wide, Very Wide), to show users scientific results and to
express users needs. The meeting will be a preparation for the CFHTLS
progress report the Steering Group will prepare for the May 2007 SAC
meeting and for the next CFHT Users meeting planned by May 2007 in
Marseille (likely May 9-11).
During this meeting we will have a session on the future surveys, beyond
CFHTLS, with CFHT.

4. Redshift photometriques du CFHTLS
The photometric redshifts computed using the TERAPIX-T0003
photometric catalogues are available on line. They have been calibrated
using 3200 spectroscopic redshifts from the VLT-VIRMOS deep survey.

5. Worldwide CFHTLS Data Releases
Since Jun. 30, 2006, all raw data and Elixir data products obtained from
May 30, 2003 to May 29, 2004 are publicly available and open to world
access at CADC. The first worlwide release of stacks and catalogs
produced by Terapix will happen in February 2007. It will consist of the
T0003 release.
